"The Song I Owe You"

Floriana Cangiano: vocals and readings
Ernesto Nobili: guitar
Francesco di Cristofaro: accordion, baglamas, flutes

In the performance "The Song I Owe You," Flo sings and narrates the adventurous, lighthearted, and melancholic time of adolescence. Set against the backdrop of Naples, a city both cruel and disorienting, this show weaves together words and songs — those written by the singer-songwriter and those that shaped her. This is the playlist — or as we would have said in the 1990s, when this story begins, the compilation — of an invisible girl, born and raised in the concrete outskirts, with a beautiful voice and thus a possibility. Perhaps! "The Song I Owe You" takes the audience on a small journey of growth, starting from the Naples of Maradona and smuggling, and reaching the Biennale, Paris, and Mexico City. Ten chapters recount ten extraordinary and unexpected encounters that changed the life of our courageous protagonist: with Maddalena, a transgender prostitute from the Salon Corona; with Fabrizio De André; with Nonna Antonietta, who removed the evil eye and banned music at home; and with Love, that is born and that ends. A gallery of situations and characters is narrated with the songs they inspired and with the words of the eponymous novel (published by Marotta&Cafiero). Flo's evocative and daring voice intertwines with the notes of a guitar, both rhythmic and romantic, moving between South American suggestions and songwriter music. A visceral song orchestrates a collective ritual, piercing the sides of our memory and our emotions. Floriana Cangiano. Singer-songwriter, author, and theater actress, Flo is an unpredictable entertainer and a refined storyteller. She graduated summa cum laude in singing and choral studies at the Conservatorio S. Pietro a Majella in Naples and made her debut at a very young age in the world of musical theater, under the aegis of Claudio Mattone. In 2014, her first album, "D'amore e di altre cose irreversibili," was released in Europe and was met with great enthusiasm from critics and the public, earning some of the most prestigious Italian awards (Premio Musicultura 2014, Premio “Radio Rai 1” for Best Music at Musicultura 2014, Premio Assoluto Andrea Parodi 2014, Best Music at Premio Parodi 2014, Best Arrangement at Premio Parodi 2014). Two years later, she released "Il Mese del Rosario" (Best Lyrics at Premio Bianca d'Aponte 2014, Premio Musicultura 2015, and nominated for the Targa Tenco in the categories Best Album of the Year and Best Song). In 2018, her third album, "La Mentirosa," was released, cementing her place among the most refined singer-songwriters of so-called auteur World music. Some of the most important music journals in Europe (fRoots, Songlines, etc.) have written about her as an artist with an unmistakable style, rich in references and contaminations, yet original and personal. Throughout her career, she has recorded and shared the stage with artists such as Stefano Bollani, Tosca, Paolo Fresu, Daniele Sepe, Enrico Rava, Jorge Hernandez, Luca Aquino, Elena Ledda, Paolo Angeli, and Peppe Servillo. She has performed at many of the most important World music festivals in Italy and abroad: Europe, South America, Africa, and Canada. In theater, she has starred in musical and prose performances directed by renowned directors such as Alfredo Arias, Mimmo Borrelli, Davide Iodice, Massimo Luconi, Claudio Mattone, Gino Landi, and many others. She has accompanied Daria Bignardi in two performances, "La coscienza dell’ansia" and "Libri che mi hanno rovinato la vita." She has composed soundtracks for theater, cinema ("Noi siamo Francesco" with Elena Sofia Ricci and "Ultima fermata" with Claudia Cardinale), and television ("Mina Settembre 2" with Serena Rossi). She hosted a series of music episodes for Swiss radio and television, participated in various documentaries for Deutschlandfunk Kultur, and published numerous articles on culture. In November 2020, her fourth album of original songs, "31Salvitutti," produced by the Frenchman Sebastien Martel, was released. The last time we welcomed her to FolkClub, she presented the splendid show "Brave Ragazze": a work of research and translation of some masterpieces by the most courageous and controversial artists of the Latin world, from which an album was made in 2022. On stage, Flo (vocals and readings) is joined by the masterful Ernesto Nobili on guitar and Francesco di Cristofaro on accordion, baglamas, and flutes.
