Jon Gomm is a singer-songwriter and solo acoustic guitarist based in Yorkshire, UK, renowned for his virtuosic, distinctive, and inimitable guitar-playing style. His approach involves striking, tapping, and retuning the guitar as he plays, producing a massive, multi-layered sound filled with bass, rhythm, and almost orchestral depth and complexity—all from a single guitar, without electronic aids. His songs are often deeply emotional, whether sung with his soft, heartfelt voice or performed instrumentally. His live performances are intimate and powerful, infused with the natural wit and self-deprecating humor of his Northern English roots. Jon is also a passionate advocate for mental health and neurodiversity. At just two years old, Jon asked his parents for a guitar for Christmas. Instead, they gave him a ukulele, which he promptly destroyed in frustration. They then got him a guitar and found him a teacher. Growing up in Blackpool, UK, Jon was exposed to music through his father, a journalist and music critic for the local paper, who often brought touring bands to their home. As a result, Jon had the fortune of meeting and drawing inspiration from luminaries such as Jack Bruce (Cream), Walter Trout, and B.B. King. Jon turned down a place at Oxford University to attend London’s Guitar Institute and later the Leeds Conservatoire. Leeds became his adopted home, and in 2021, the city’s museum requested one of Jon’s guitars for its permanent collection. From there, he began self-releasing music and performing live tours, achieving remarkable success as a fiercely independent artist. Defying industry norms, he has sold thousands of albums during tours across Europe, North and South America, Australia, Asia, and Africa. His breakthrough came in 2012 with the release of his debut single, "Passionflower", accompanied by a video of his performance. The video went viral, amassing over 20 million views across platforms. This sudden shift from obscurity to mainstream recognition was a surprising experience for someone so deeply devoted to his craft. Jon remains a humble guitar hero, firmly rooted in the UK acoustic circuit. Jon has released four studio albums, the latest being "The Faintest Idea" on Kscope Records. UK’s Guitarist magazine stated, “While The Faintest Idea is first and foremost a masterclass in songwriting—with Gomm exploring the beauty and pain of life’s struggles—it hasn’t stopped him from casually tearing apart accepted truths of acoustic technique along the way, with a host of sounds akin to three-handed guitar parts.” The album features singles such as "Cocoon" and "Deep Sea Fishes". In 2020, Jon was voted Best Acoustic Guitarist in the World in the largest online poll of its kind, conducted by MusicRadar and its sister publications, including Total Guitar and Guitar World. In 2021, Ibanez released the JGM10 and JGM5 Jon Gomm Signature Model guitars, making him only the third guitarist ever to design a signature acoustic with Ibanez, following in the footsteps of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. Jon continues to engage with his dedicated online "Gommunity" of fans while writing new music and performing live shows.
