Preston Reed: guitar
Internationally recognized as one of the world's most influential guitarists and an extraordinary innovator, Preston Reed was born in Armonk, New York, in 1955. After receiving classical guitar lessons, his interest in the instrument was rekindled at the age of 16 by listening to Jorma Kaukonen. This sparked a brilliant light and a new fire within him! In the 1980s and 1990s, Preston universally revolutionized the way acoustic guitar is played. His groundbreaking percussive guitar technique—integrating live grooves on the neck and body of the guitar with other techniques—opened new and exciting horizons for acoustic guitarists worldwide, inspiring artists like Andy McKee and Jon Gomm. Reed's captivating compositions, ranging from rhythmic grooves to intimate blues and melodic ballads, are as enthralling in live performances as his guitar techniques, always leaving audiences wide-eyed. Rock, folk, metal, jazz, funk, country, bluegrass, world music, and classical styles all come into play in Reed's distinctive soundscape, capable of telling compelling stories without words. Since his debut album "Acoustic Guitar" in 1979, Preston Reed has released seventeen critically acclaimed albums of original music and performed on six continents. He has also held several masterclasses at the Berklee College of Music. Notably, Ed Sheeran attended his summer guitar workshops in Scotland. His live performances, including the 2012 TEDGlobal appearance with Usman Riaz, have garnered millions of views online. His music has received numerous awards and accolades throughout a career spanning six decades.
