Born in 2013 as a trio with the participation of the legendary Don Moye, already a member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago (their only album, "Jazz (R)evolution", dates back to 2015), the duo formed by Baba Sissoko and Antonello Salis remained alive even after the defection of the black American drummer, which took place in 2016. Attending one of their concerts is always a unique and exciting experience. In their performance, almost always "without a net", traditional African rhythms and jazz improvisation come together in a fireworks display full of creative energy.
Baba Sissoko, african from Mali, born in 1963, who has moved to our country for years (he jokingly defines himself as "Afro-Calabrian"), is descended from an important family of Griots, wandering figures who hold and pass on knowledge, tradition, history and local culture. His style is very particular, as he manages to merge, in a decidedly original way, the melodies and rhythms of the African tradition with the sounds and harmonies of American music such as blues and jazz. He has prestigious collaborations behind him, from Dee Dee Bridgewater to Roberto Fonseca, from the Art Ensemble of Chicago to Omar Sosa, but at the same time he is the protagonist of always new original projects.
Antonello Salis, born in 1950, Sardinian pianist and accordionist who moved to Rome in 1975, is since the second half of the 70s one of the most personal and creative Italian jazz musicians: he founded the trio Cadmo, played with Lester Bowie and Paolo Fresu, always alternating numerous and interesting collaborations with solo piano performances. Salis, who plays by ear, is in many ways the most "physical" and African of Italian jazz musicians. Perhaps for this reason the meeting with the African musician Baba Sissoko still appears today among the most successful of the many of which he was the protagonist, able to reserve surprises every time, not only to the public, but to the musicians themselves.
A pearl for our XXXIV Season, an amazing duo on our stage: Baba Sissoko (voice, tamani, n'goni) and Antonello Salis (piano, accordion)
