"Young and Foolish" is a beautiful song from 1954 written by Albert Hague and Arnold Horwitt, which has become part of the international jazz repertoire. It’s an ode to youth and the ‘foolishness’ typical of that age, with many splendid versions, from Bill Evans to Tony Bennett, from Count Basie to Keith Jarrett, to name a few of the most significant. We at FolkClub (always believing that in order to form quality musicians, it is essential to let them face an attentive and knowledgeable audience, in optimal conditions for performance and listening), in close collaboration with the Jazz Department of the "G. Verdi" Conservatory of Turin, have decided to dedicate an annual event to presenting two selected ensembles of deserving students to our audience. These young musicians, who are the future of music in Italy and -we hope- in the world, will, at the beginning of the new academic year and guided by their prestigious teachers, unleash their contagious creative sensitivities with an enjoyable and high-quality performance. The evening will be divided into two sets, with each featuring a different ensemble.
GARINO, PALAZZO, JITARU TRIO
Three generations of students from the Jazz Department of the "G. Verdi" Conservatory of Turin meet in a unique saxophone-guitar-piano formation, inspired by the historic album Power of Three by Michel Petrucciani, Jim Hall, and Wayne Shorter. The trio will present several original compositions and some modern jazz classics.
Simone Garino, an eclectic and versatile musician, plays the full range of saxophones and clarinets. He is the co-leader of the duo Mizookstra, with producer and sound designer Mario Conte, and of the Night Dreamers quartet, the former resident band of the Rai5 show "Nessun Dorma". Among his recent collaborations is one with Andrea Laszlo De Simone, on the soundtrack for Le Règne Animal, winner of the 2024 César Award for Best Original Score. He has performed at some of the most important festivals, clubs, and theaters worldwide, from Carnegie Hall in New York to the National Theater of Senegal. He has played with artists such as Peter Gabriel, Billy Cobham, Jon Balke, Anthony Braxton, and Enrico Rava. Recently, he was a soloist for the Italian premiere of A House of Call, a work by German composer Heiner Goebbels, performed by the Rai National Symphony Orchestra.
Gianluca Palazzo graduated in classical guitar and later in jazz composition from the Turin Conservatory, with top marks and honors. He honed his skills with musicians such as Bebo Ferra, Peter Bernstein, and Aaron Parks and won a scholarship as one of the best students at the Nuoro Jazz seminars. He has performed at some of the major jazz festivals in Italy, sharing the stage with artists like Andy Sheppard, Uri Caine, and Nico Morelli.
David Jitaru was born in Turin in 2003 to a Romanian family. After attending the Newton Music High School in Chivasso, where he studied classical violin as his primary instrument, he enrolled in the Jazz Piano course at the Turin Conservatory. He has participated in several showcases for emerging jazz talents, such as Too Young To Jazz and Nu JazzEration.
MATTIA BASILICO QUARTET
This project is inspired by the sax/guitar pairing, which has been the protagonist of countless sonic masterpieces. The guiding artists are figures such as Brecker and Metheny, creators of iconic albums like Tales from the Hudson or Time is of the Essence. The quartet, composed of Mattia Basilico, Sonia Infriccioli, Gianmaria Ferrario, and Luca Guarino, draws on these sounds, offering pieces from both albums. Driven by a deep love for jazz music, the quartet will also present standard pieces arranged by the group, which serve as fertile ground for creativity, improvisation, and interplay between the musicians.
